7 Creative Christmas Gift Ideas
By Kel | 16-Dec-08 in Tips and Tricks
Christmas is almost here and are you feeling just a little frazzled trying to come up with ideas for Christmas pressies? It doesn’t always have to rotate between clothes, socks, cosmetics and undies every few years. Here are some Christmas gift ideas that are not only creative but thoughtful too and you can bet it will be appreciated.
- Gift Baskets and Hampers
Instead of buying pre-packaged gift baskets from a gift shop or the chemist’s make one of your own. Put things in the hamper you know the gift-receiver will enjoy. It could be chocolates and lollies, cosmetics, assorted foods, bathroom products, wine or anything else. You can buy several little and inexpensive gifts and when they receive a hamper full of goodies, they will enjoy the fact that it has not just one, but so many gifts.

- Personalised Gifts
There are several options for giving personalised gifts to someone. Harvey Norman’s photo gift centre allows you to transform your photos in great ways into posters, canvasses, mugs etc. Or at Foghorn, you can design a t-shirt for someone. Just look online and there are heaps of options to choose from.
- An Extra Terrestrial Option
You can’t fly them to the moon yet. But in the absence of that option, you can buy them an acre of land on the moon as a novelty gift. Also, a great way to sweep a lady off her feet would be to name a star after her!
- Adopt a Pet
If you know they’ve been looking for a pet, why not gift them one this Christmas? But instead of heading out to the pet shops, why don’t you adopt one? The RSPCA’s Adopt a Pet site lets you search for animals, birds, rodents, reptiles etc and choose the one you’d like to adopt.

- Use Your Imagination
Instead of buying something this Christmas; it might be a great idea to make something. Some popular ideas are:
- Handmade greeting cards
- Bake something (cupcakes with personalised icing work really well!) or make fudge or everyone.
- Write a poem,
- Make a book of memories you have with the person
- Create a mix cd of their favourite songs or songs that say something about the relationship you share with the person.
- Record a video message (especially great for out-of-town friends and rellies)
- Gift a Favour
Instead of giving people things they don’t need, give them some favours that would really come in handy. Make them a book of vouchers offering them things you think they could really use.
- A massage for someone who works a physically tiring job
- Baby sitting (especially for new parents)
- House sitting for someone who rarely leaves thouse (while they go on a vacation, or even just go shopping)
- Dog walking
- A chat or even a cuddle
- A manicure or pedicure (great for mums and grandmas who’re too busy or too old to take care of themselves
- Teach them a skill you have.
- Do a Good Deed
Christmas is all about giving right? So instead of spending heaps of money on pressies this year, get some friends to pitch in and give a gift to someone who really needs it. You have heaps of options and here are some of my ideas.
- The Dreamworld theme park on the Gold Coast lets you adopt a wild animal and support it. (No you don’t have to bring it home!)
- You can make a donation to The Oxfam Fund to help poor communities around the world.
- You could sponsor a child through World Vison.
- Talk to those giving you a gift, and ask them to donate the money they would spend on you, to a charity of your choice. You could inspire others to follow suit.
So make this Christmas more fun and meaningful for the people you love by giving them pressies that are thoughtful and definitely can’t be recycled!

I used #1 for my boyfriend's parents this year because they're people who have everything - but I took the lazy route and ordered a pre-made one instead of making my own, because I had to ship it to Tassie! I wish I'd known about the moon site in #3, because that would be perfect for my sister, who is an astronomer! Oh well, there's always her birthday...#4 I would stress that this is ONLY an option if you know the person very well and know exactly what they want. If you're not sure, you're better off getting them something else. A large number of the pets in shelters like the RSPCA are unwanted gifts, unfortunately :( And I used #6 for my sister-in-law - I'm giving her and her husband a babysitting voucher to go with their Gold Class movie voucher! A thoughtful, inexpensive gift means so much more than an expensive gift with no effort put into it :)
That's really nice Jen that you put so much thought and effort into your gifts. I'm sure your family will love it! I love the ideas, and though I don't really celebrate Christmas, I think I could use many of them for birthdays and other occasions too! I agree Jen, a gift isn't about spending lots of money, it's about being thoughtful.
Is everyone forgetting alcohol??? The gift of happiness!
Good point Jim! When in doubt, alcohol or alcohol-related is good, as long as you know they drink!
