The easiest and best way to get to know someone on an online dating site is to chat with them. Emails are good initially but after a while you would love a conversation with the person wouldn’t you? Here are some tips that might come in handy.
- Be Honest
The golden rule for online dating is to be honest. You wouldn’t like to fall in love with someone who pretends to be someone they’re not. So when you’re chatting, be honest and answer all questions truthfully.
- Humour Helps
Humour always helps to break the ice. Your chat conversations don’t have to be all serious and sombre. Crack a few jokes and the atmosphere automatically becomes a little more relaxed.
- Keep it Clean
Please keep sexual innuendos and sex-related remarks outside the chat room, even if it’s just a joke. You never know who might get offended and if they report you, you could end up losing your membership on the site.
- Flirt A Little
It’s okay to flirt. Really! I mean you’re chatting so you can find a date or a relationship right, so flirt a little with the person you’re interested in. But don’t overdo it or you might across as way too desperate or even creepy!
- Good Conversation
Keep the conversation going because when conversation dwindles, the other person automatically assumes you’re boring or you’re not interested in them. If you run out of ideas, ask them something about their profile or bring up a current event. Also, when they’re asking you questions, they want to get to know you so try not to limit your answers to monosyllables.
- Use Lesser Emoticons
There’s nothing more annoying than receiving replies in emoticons when you ask someone a question. Use fewer emoticons and actually write some replies. And also, not everyone might know what your abbreviations stand for so keep the “lol”, “rofl” and the “brb” on the downlow. It took me a while to figure out this one: “So ur gonna hv2 w8 2 fn out mre 4m me” until my niece translated it for me as “So you’re going to have to wait to find out more from me”. Instant rejection!
- Play it Safe
Most importantly, be careful. Unfortunately there are many scammers out there waiting to take advantage of you. So protect your identity and never give out any personal information. If it seems dodgy, it probably is. Here are some chat room safety tips that might help.
Chat rooms and instant messaging are fantastic ways of getting to know someone so use the services to get acquainted with other singles, make friends and fall in love.

I wholeheartedly agree with number 6! While I will use some abbreviations with people I know well, I usually refrain from using them with someone I've just started chatting with. As an online gamer I can have whole conversations with people using only abbreviations and gamer lingo, but I can definitely appreciate that other people might not understand it! So keep it simple until you can understand the capabilities of the other person. Also, too many abbreviations just looks like laziness to me and like you're not making an effort!
