The past few weeks have been devastating for Australians. Whether you’re in Victoria or overseas, I know the Black Saturday bushfires has affected Australians everywhere. I wish I could say its over, but even as I write this fire fighters are struggling to keep those fires in control. Support is pouring in not just from across the country, but from the world as well. Its one of the worst tragedies to affect Australia and everyone wants to help.
We’ve had the charity sporting events and now the music big wigs are coming together for a benefit concert. It’s called the Sound Relief Concert and will be held at the Melbourne and Sydney Cricket Grounds.
Both gigs will take place simultaneously on Saturday March 14 so the line up will obviously be different at each venue. However bands Jet and Wolfmother will each play at one city at the start and then fly interstate, swap cities and perform at the end of the concert in the other city.
So far, from what I’ve heard, the MCG will play host to Kings of Leon, Jack Johnson, Gabriela Cilmi, Paul Kelly, Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson, Midnight Oil, Split Enz and Hunters and Collectors – the last three reforming especially for the concert. While at the SCG it will be Coldplay, The Presets, Eskimo Joe, Icehouse, Hoodoo Gurus, Josh Pyke and You Am I. More acts are expected to be announced before the tickets go on sale.
The organisers of the concert have great hopes for the concert and Victorian premier John Brumby said it’s definitely the largest musical event in the country. They hope to raise at least $5 million from the events.
Proceeds from the SCG event will be donated in part to the bushfire appeal and part to victims of the floods in Queensland. The money raised from the MCG event will go to the Red Cross.
If you’re in Sydney or Melbourne, or willing to travel interstate – do go for the concert. You’ll enjoy some great music and contribute to a good cause at the same time. Tickets are available on Ticketek. For those of us who can’t make it to the concert, I guess we’ll just have to wait for the DVDs to be released.
